Olive Creekmore Akin

Akin, Olive Creekmore, age 99, of Knoxville, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at NHC Farragut. She was born in Winfield, Tenn. on August 17, 1917; moved to Monterey, Tenn., in 1930; and attended Murfreesboro College for Women. In 1937, she married Robert Louis Akin, M.D. Following WWII, they moved to Knoxville, where he established a dermatology practice. From 1978 – 1990, she lived in Fairfield Glade, after which she permanently returned to Knoxville. Olive was a member of First Baptist Church, Knoxville, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was very active in the Woman’s Auxiliary to the Knoxville Academy of Medicine, serving as president (1956 – 57) and president of the Woman’s Auxiliary to the Tennessee State Medical Association (1960 – 61). She participated and held offices in various civic organizations. She was an avid reader, played golf in several leagues, and enjoyed University of Tennessee sports. Olive was preceded in death by her husband Robert Louis Akin, M.D; father and mother, Earl Creekmore and Lessie Creekmore Stringfield; stepfather Tom Stringfield; mother-in law Betty Hays; son-in law Herbert M. Scull, Jr.; brothers-in-law Robert L. Cate and John Hays and wife Jean; and sister-in law Marion Akin Newport and husband Elam James. She is survived by son Hobart Akin, M.D (wife Ramona); daughters Roberta (Bobbie) Scull and Betty Ebbs (husband Doug), all of Knoxville; sister Violet Cate of Cookeville; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 3 nieces; and 2nephews. The family will receive friends from 11:30 – 12:15 PM, Friday, September 16th, at Sherwood Memorial Gardens Chapel, 3176 Airport Hwy, Alcoa, Tenn. The service will follow with reverends Jeff Stevens and Dave Ward officiating. Grandsons will serve as pall bearers. After the service, family and out-of-town guests will gather for the graveside committal and lunch at Sevier Heights Baptist Church, 3232 Alcoa Hwy, Knoxville.
