Pauline Rich Lyday

Lyday, Pauline Rich - age 90, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, February 19, 2015, surrounded by her family. Polly was born on March 10, 1924, to William and Ada Rich in Pickett County, Tennessee. Polly was the middle of two sisters, all of whom were born in a log cabin on the family farm. Polly was predeceased by her parents, older sister, Ruth Boody, and youngest son, Rex Lyday. Survivors include sister Evelyn Robbins of Gainesville, Florida; children, Kathy Lyday(Burlington, NC), August Lyday (Knoxville), and Richard Lyday(Knoxville); grandchildren, Landis Lee, Jessica Lyday, Roth Lee, Will Lyday, and Russell Lyday, several beloved nieces and nephews, and numerous close extended family members. Polly graduated from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (now Tennessee Technological University) with a teaching certificate in Home Economics. During WW II, she took several months off to work at Oak Ridge National Laboratories in the war effort before continuing her studies. After graduation, she worked as a Home Demonstration and with 4-H in several Tennessee counties before marrying and eventually moving to Knoxville. Polly retired from the Knoxville City School System after thirty years as a junior high school home economics teacher, teaching hundreds of young women and men how to bake biscuits and sew. She was a beloved mother and grandmother, a sweet and gentle woman who loved to travel, take water classes at the Y, and worship with her friends at West Hills Presbyterian Church. She maintained a wonderful sense of humor throughout her life and was a tower of strength and compassion for friends and family facing difficult times. In addition to Polly’s dear friends who meant the world to her, our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to Karen Nickell and Dawn Brewton at Summit Farragut, Reverends Fred Fowler and John McKenzie, West Hills Presbyterian Church; and the entire team at Avalon Hospice, who consistently provided expert care, kindness, and compassion. A memorial service will be held at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel on Kingston Pike on Tuesday, Feb 24, at 4:00 pm with visitation occurring immediately after.
