Richard Eugene Dew

Richard Eugene Dew, Sr. – was born July 12, 1917 in Knoxville, Tennessee to Howard A. Dew and Eva Stewart Dew and departed this life on April 9, 2013. He was a kind and gentle man who always went out of his way to help others regardless of status or circumstances. He is preceded in death by his wife of fifty-three years, Margaret "Evelyn" Rogers Dew and son, Larry Allison Dew. He is survived by his son, Richard Dew, Jr. and wife Donna Johnson of Atlanta; daughter, Catherine Dew Stooksbury and husband, Larry Stooksbury of Powell; grandchildren, Kristin Weimer, Jessica Dew, Anton Dew, Eric Bliss, Shannon Essary, Stephen Stooksbury and Sarah Arnold; great-grandchildren, Garrett Essary, Gracie Stooksbury, Amy Dew, and Hollis Leitch. He was a 1935 graduate of Knoxville High School and worked as a supervisor at Y-12 in Oak Ridge for more than forty-three years before retiring in 1987. He was a man of strong faith and a member of Powell United Methodist Church where he held many offices. He was chairman of the board when the church was relocated from Spring Street to its current location on Emory Road and was instrumental in the planning and implementation of the building of the new facility. He received international acclaim for his work in the Powell Lions Club with over forty years of active service which included serving as president. He loved all sports and played on the softball team that won the 1938 World Series in Chicago. He was an avid Vol fan, attending games at home and away for as long as he was physically able. He had a passion for tinkering and fixing things and was always working on a project. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Arbor Terrace's Third Floor Evergreen Unit where the staff members became like family during his time there. The wonderful care and love he received from them were beyond anything we could have imagined. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Greenwood Cemetery for an 11:00 a.m. graveside service officiated by Reverend Pam Neal.
