Robert R. Gilbertson

ROBERT B. GILBERTSON, M.D. passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2011. He received his medical training at the Universities of Tennessee and Michigan. Dr. "G" practiced internal medicine in Knoxville for 50 years. He and Dr. Charles Sienknecht formed a partnership in 1956 that became Sienknecht, Gilbertson, Turner, and Wade and later Ft, Sanders Internal Medicine Group. His traditional consulting approach to internal medicine expanded his practice beyond Ft, Sanders to St, Mary's and Baptist Hospitals. Highly regarded by his colleagues, Dr. Gilbertson served as Chief of Staff at Ft, Sanders, Chief of Medicine at both Baptist and St, Mary's, and he was elected president of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine. He was also professor of Clinical medicine and honored as a "pioneer physician" at U.T. Medical Center. In his final years of practice, he founded the Ft. Sanders Diabetes Center. He was an elder and longtime member of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church. Born in Memphis the youngest of 4 children to Wallace and Alberta Gilbertson, he was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Wallace, Alberta Waddey, and Johnny. Preceded in death also by his wife of 38 years, Peggy, who is remembered as a servant to the Knoxville community and former "First Lady". He is survived by his wife Barbara Bowlin Gilbertson. Survived by his 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Delphine of Seattle, Steve and Ceva of Milwaukee, and Tom and Jill of Knoxville; seven grandchildren, Walton and A1i of Knoxville, Chelsea and Sam of Milwaukee, and Chad, Travis, and Allison of Tampa, as well as 4 great-grandchildren, Jake, Nina, Amelia, and Ashlyn, of Tampa. Also loved and respected by Barbara's children, Deanna and Frank Slagle of Knoxville, Donnie and Abby Bowlin of Franklin and her grandchildren, Jay and Laura Slagle of Knoxville. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 22 at 1:00pm, officiated by The Rev. Dr. L Holton Siegling and Rev. Dr. Jan Buxton-Wade. Receiving of friends will follow the service in Barron Hall at the church. Interment will be private.
