Robert Holt Schriver Jr.

Robert H. Schriver, Jr. – age 86 of Knoxville, went to eternal life on Thursday, December 19, 2013 following a strong two-year effort to recover from an injury. He was born May 27, 1927 in Knoxville, Tennessee to the late Robert H. and Mary Dooley Schriver. His father was founder of Schriver Brothers clothing store on Gay Street where he also worked for many of his younger years. Bob was a graduate of Knoxville High School in 1945 and the University of Tennessee in 1950, where he was a member of the SAE Fraternity. He served in the United States Nave in World War II in the Pacific Ocean at the age of eighteen. When the first Atomic Bomb was dropped, shipmates said “Ask Schriver where Oak Ridge is.” since he was from Tennessee, and though living twenty miles away, he told them he had “never heard of it.” He saw the devastations of Hiroshima. He served a second time in the Navy as an officer during the Korean Conflict. He married Julia Driscoll, his wife of sixty-two years in 1951, and they went to Norfolk, Virginia for two years. He was a building contractor, and also developed many subdivisions, the first being the Hemlock Road Area in Westmoreland, others were Hickory Hills, the last remaining block in Sequoyah Hills, Foxfire and many others. He enjoyed many years with his family at their mountain home at Norton Creek, near the Smoky Mountains, and also at Hilton Head Island. He and his family lived in Westmoreland Heights for fifty-eight years where he was active in the Community Association. He was a charter member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council. He attended All Saints Catholic Church. He was a charter member of the Knoxville Racquet Club and was an avid tennis player all of his life. He continued to play with his long standing group at Cherokee Country Club until he was eighty years of age. He was also a member of the Fork and Foam Dinner Group, a group of his closest friends for most of his life, who met once a month for sixty years. He also enjoyed his association with many friends in his illustrious coffee groups over the years. The most precious part of his life was his three children, Robert H. Schriver, III and wife Debby; Suzanne Schriver and husband David Rechter; and Father Ragan Schriver. He also had three granddaughters, Kate Schriver, Julianna Rechter, and Amelia Rechter and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sisters, Dorothy Schriver Trotman, Ellen Schriver Jellett and his brother, Dr. William Ragan Schriver. The family extends special thanks to his one of a kind and very special doctor, Dr. Amy Bentley and to his special caregiver, Susie Stinnett. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2013 at All Saints Catholic Church on Cedar Bluff Road., with his son, Father Ragan Schriver serving as celebrant. There will be a private burial service at Calvary Cemetery with full military honors presented by the Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel on Kingston Pike followed by a brief Christian Prayer service.
