Roy Blanton Wyatt

Dr. Roy Blanton Wyatt, age 83, died unexpectedly of natural causes on Tuesday, April 6, 2010. He was a faithful servant of his Lord, serving as a Baptist missionary in Spain, Chile, and Colombia for over 40 years. He taught hundreds of seminary students who became leaders of the Lord’s work throughout the Spanish-speaking world, both among Baptists and other denominations. He also served as pastor in many churches and was the administrative chairman of the Baptist Mission in Colombia for seven years. Upon retirement he continued to teach in seminaries in South America and in the States. He was devoted to the Seminary Extension program for the Knox Country Association of Baptists and to the students he taught there. Dr. Wyatt was a graduate of the University of Richmond, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned both the M. Div and Th. D. degrees. He also was awarded an honorary doctorate from his university. He was a member of the Central Baptist Church, Bearden, where he was Theologian in Residence, frequently offering special classes and conferences, as well as leading with his wife a very special Sunday School class. An avid student of the Civil War and a lover of cars, he was a multi-faceted person. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and the Knoxville Civil War Roundtable. Roy had a special way of relating to people that endeared him to neighbors, fellow church members and others. His engaging smile and contagious laugh will long be remembered. Preceded in death by his parents and two adult children, Kathryn Mee and Michael Wyatt, he will be deeply missed by his wife of nearly 60 years, Joyce Cope Wyatt; daughter Debbi Christinck (Ralph); son-in-law David Mee (Bonnie); grandchildren Jonathan Mee (Ellen); Daniel Mee (Jennifer); Charlotte Crockett (Luke); Stephen Mee; Nathan Mee; Andrew Mee; Karen Mee; Elisa Christinck; Robert Christinck; and Samuel Christinck; sister Ann Wyatt Jones (John), nieces, nephews and cousins.
