Sally Lewis Newkirk

Sally Lewis Newkirk, age 92, died peacefully at home in Knoxville, Tennessee in the evening of 29 December 2022.Sally lived a long, colorful and fulfilling life as a daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. Sally was born to William George and Ruby Fugate Lewis 6 July 1930 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. She immediately moved to her father’s farm in Knox County along the French Broad River. Sally graduated Carter High School in 1948 and the University of Tennessee in 1952 from the Department of Home Economics. She then went to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston as an intern in their dietetics program. After completing the internship program Sally moved to the Washington D.C. area where she worked for the National Institutes of Health. While in D.C. she attended a friend’s wedding and met her husband of 64 years, William (Bill) Pierce Newkirk. After they were married they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where Sally worked in Christ Hospital as a dietician. The following year Bill transferred to University of Tennessee School of Law and Sally started working at East Tennessee Tuberculosis Hospital. She continued working until the birth of her second son when she dedicated her energies to full care and raising her family. Sally also had several interests that she worked on; she was a member of the Toast Mistress Club and the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities. For a short period of time Sally wrote a foods column for a local newspaper. Sally also wrote and had published two cookbooks, the first, Some Tastes of Home, and the second just recently completed, More Tastes of Home. Her other great pleasure was reading, especially murder mysteries, and British authors particularly. Sally loved food, its preparation and serving. She has prepared food for family, friends, Bill’s guests and was even roped into serving an East Tennessee breakfast for an Ambassador and his party during the Knoxville World’s Fair in 1982. And, it was all good. Sally is predeceased by her husband Bill. She is survived by her children; sons, Brian (Margie) Newkirk of Knoxville; Timothy Newkirk of Knoxville; daughter Sarah (Glenn) Ireland of Vestavia Hills, Alabama; and two granddaughters of whom she was extremely proud, Anna Pierce (Thomas) Riley of Hoover, Alabama; and Margaret Ireland of Birmingham, Alabama.
