SherrSherry Marie Monroe Wright Born July 2, 1953 Dayton, OH Earned her wings: October 11, 2017 Fort Worth, TX SHERRY MARIE MONROE WRIGHT – age 64, of Fort Worth, TX. On October 11, 2017, Sherry was released from a body that her spirit had outgrown. Ms. Wright is preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Patricia Monroe. As a Military Brat, Sherry traveled the world with her Air Force family for over 20 years. In 1973, as our nation’s military conscription law was replaced with the formation of the All-Volunteer Force (AVF), Sherry went through basic training at the US Army Training Center, Fort Jackson, SC. She responded to the call from our nation’s first attempt to maintain a standing force on a completely voluntary basis. This was a historic event. Sherry, and many other women and minorities, stepped up and volunteered to defend our constitution and our nation. At the same time she was in basic training, our nation saw: the first female enlistee accepted into the regular US Coast Guard; the first female chaplain accepted into the US military; the first woman in the history of the US armed forces to be promoted to rank of Major; the first full-time female faculty member at West Point; and first US Navy women to earn military Pilot Wings. It was a historical time for women, minorities and for our nation. In 1977, Sherry married Robert Wright and together they raised their son Jason. Although they divorced, they both remained dedicated volunteers and supporters of Jason’s Special Olympics activities. Sherry was a Civil Servant with the US Navy at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in St. Mary’s County, MD. Just like her mother, father and sisters, Sherry was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. In recent years, Sherry moved from Lexington Park, MD to Fort Worth, TX to be close to her sisters. Sherry found a loving church home and quickly joined the congregation of the Blessed Hope Baptist Church. We would like to thank the pastor and members for their love, support and encouragement as we mourn our sister’s passing. Sherry was a resident at Casa, Fort Worth, Texas. She made many friends and loved the outings and activities provided there. We have been so blessed to hear Sherry’s neighbors’ stories about how she touched their lives. We are so grateful to them for making Sherry a part of their community. Sherry leaves behind beloved family that includes: Her son, Jason K. Wright of Lexington Park, MD. Her sisters Linda Land (Michael) Johnson of Gray, GA, Evelyn Daams of Fort Worth, TX, Laura Huggins of Arlington, TX and Charlotte (Joe) Jones of Hallandale Beach, FL. Her nieces and nephews: Travis Provost, Nicole Randy and Randy Maglothin, Billie and Joey Diaz, Emily Alexander, Danny and Lauren Daams, Dustin and Kim Huggins, Jessica and Matthew Alexander-Hardin, and Dustin Daams. Her Great Nieces and Nephews: Damon Diaz, Danielle Diaz, Erin Hawkins, Danica Diaz, Wyatt Huggins, Malcolm Hardin and Cody Huggins. Additionally, Sherry’s passing is mourned by her many beloved cousins. Ms. Wright will be honored at a graveside gathering of her family and loved ones at 1:00 pm Tuesday October 17, 2017 at Pond Hill Cemetery (101 Co Rd 220 Athens, TN 37303).
