Dr. Sidney Wayne Mulkey

Dr. Sidney Wayne Mulkey, age 83 of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, June 28, surrounded by his loving family. He served the state of Tennessee for over 42 years in the field of rehabilitation. Wayne was a Professor at the University of Tennessee for more than 35 years, where he earned the Citation of Extraordinary Service to the University in 2017. He was also active in both state and national professional rehabilitation organizations. He earned a Bachelors Degree from East Tennessee State University in 1963, a Masters Degree from the University of Tennessee in 1970, and a Ph.D. from Florida State University in 1980. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Knoxville, and the Knoxville Optimist Club. Wayne was an avid lover of music playing both guitar and stand-up bass. He was a faithful fan of the University of Tennessee Athletics - “GO VOLS!” Preceded in death by his parents, James Henry and Bessie Sharp Mulkey, and brothers, James Lyle (Toby) Mulkey, Delbert Leroy (Roy) Mulkey; he is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Powers Mulkey; daughter, Lauren Mulkey Stewart (Kevin Stewart); son, Henry Wayne Mulkey (Alisha Spears Mulkey); granddaughters: Ava Ross Stewart, Evelyn Monteen Stewart, Iris Sidney Mulkey and Eleanor Ann Mulkey; grandson, Asa Henry Mulkey, and brother Bobby Leon Mulkey. After a private Graveside Service officiated by Pam Neal, First Baptist Church Knoxville, a “Celebration of Life” Service will be held Tuesday, July 5, 2022 from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at the University of Tennessee Gardens McIlwaine Friendship Pavilion, 2518 Jacob Drive, Knoxville, TN 37996. https://utgardens.tennessee.edu/locations/knoxville/event-space-knoxville/mcilwaine-friendship-pavilion/ Please dress casually and wear UT orange.
