Susanne (Sue) Mauer

Susanne (Sue) Mauer, age 83, of Knoxville, passed away on Friday, October 19, 2018. She was a daughter, mother, wife, and grandmother. Sue was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Cathedral. She was a civic activist, President of Comm. Forum, Board Member and VP of Council of West Knox Homeowners, and President of Crestwood Hills Homeowners, as well as founding board member of the Frank Strang Senior Center. She was very active and continually involved with the Senior Citizen groups in the community. Throughout her career, Sue was a former personnel director, newspaper advertising director, marketing director, ladies radio talk show host, and reporter in Cuba during the 1959 Castro Cuban Revolution. She was the head of Welcome Wagon and Newcomers groups, Junior Achievement board member, as well as a Sangamon service representative. Sue was also the major spearhead for the historical overlay of the Major Reynolds Bearden property and Knoxville Greenway Community Advocate Recipient. Sue was also a Knoxville Cornerstone Recipient. While born in New York in April 1935, she proceeded to live in New Jersey, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, and Michigan before settling in Tennessee in the 1970s. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edmond and Mary Spence, stepmother Regina Spence, and brother Robert Spence. Sue is survived by her husband Ronald Mauer, daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle (Bill) and Maureen (Bob), and grandchildren, Susanne and Chris Beckett, John Turner, Ashley Turner, Mitchell Turner, and Will Stokes, as well as several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all that loved Sue. A Funeral Mass will be held 11 am, Saturday, Oct 27 at All Saints Catholic Church, Father Douglas Owens officiating. Interment to follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5pm-7pm, Friday, Oct 26 at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
