Mr. Thomas Joseph (Tommy) "Pops" Slack

Slack, Thomas (Tommy) Joseph, age 86, of Knoxville, left this world peacefully Wednesday morning, December 31, 2014 to celebrate the new year in Heaven with his mother and father, Alexine Peebles Slack and Thomas Richard Slack and his wife and mother of his four sons, Dorothy Foster Slack. Tommy was a member of West Emory Presbyterian Church. He lived a quiet and strong faith that shone forth vividly in the love, interest and time that he gave to others. People were drawn to Tommy throughout his life simply because of who he was and the joy he brought in day to day living! Tommy was an outstanding athlete in several sports. His Knoxville High School football team won three state championships and he lettered as a Sophomore at the University of Tennessee under Coach General Neyland. He played for the Army for three years and his team won the service championship. Tommy was an outstanding golfer and also won the National Championship in King Mackrel Fishing. Tommy, better known as “Pop” will be remembered most for the positive effect he had on the young men in his life. He was a mentor to so very many whom he coached and worked with in his business, Slack’s TV Sales and Service. Tommy is survived by his wife, Sylvia Carr Slack; sons and daughters-in-law, T.J. Slack, Bob and Mary Slack, Steve and Paula Slack and Greg and Phyllis Slack; his eleven grandchildren, Stephanie Slack, Tom Slack, Foster Slack, Steven Slack (Kristen), Adam Slack (Ellen), Parker Slack, Tyler Slack (Julia), Gregory Slack (Jaclyn), Jason Slack, Jennifer Slack and Cindy Budd (G.J.); twelve great-grandchildren, Alec, Jake, Avery, Emory, Bailey, Eliza, David, M.J., Joshua, Jon Tyler, Walker and the late Lylie Budd; brother, Colonel Richard Slack (Susan); nephew, Major Todd Slack (Jessica); his wife’s children, Susan Larson (Steve), Richard Gettys (Pat), Glenn Gettys (June); his wife’s grandchildren, Trent and Nathan Larson. The family would like to thank the staff at Ben Atchley State Veterans’ Home for their love and compassion they gave to Tommy in the months he was in their care. They each became family and we will be forever grateful. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Saturday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with a funeral service to follow with Reverend Dr. Augusta Boyd “Miki” Vanderbilt officiating. Interment will be private.
