Virginia Ann Zimmermann

On a day that began with a glorious sunrise, (March 4, 2025), Virginia Ann Zimmermann died peacefully in Knoxville, following a stroke days earlier. Born December 11, 1917, in St. Louis, MO., she proudly lived 107 years, 2 months and 21 days. She spent most of her first 101 years in Oakland and Kirkwood, MO., St. Louis suburbs. For three years (1959-1962) she lived in Lancaster, CA, where her husband's engineering work for McDonnell- Douglas took them to Edwards Air Force Base. In 2019, she moved from Kirkwood to Knoxville, TN to be near her daughter Sandra and lived at NHC's Cavette Hill. A person who loved special occasions, she excitedly celebrated her 107th birthday amid family, friends, residents and festive balloons. As her long-time custom --even in a wheelchair-- she moved from table to table greeting guests. Virginia, a 1935 graduate of Kirkwood High School, was an excellent homemaker, a dedicated church-goer, a leader or participant in many community organizations, an avid bridge player, and lover of flowers, gardens, and birds (especially cardinals). Over the years, she did volunteer work in the Girl Scouts, the Christian Women's Club, the African Violet Society of America (for which she once co-chaired a national convention in St. Louis), Concordia Lutheran Church in Kirkwood, and Adams Place for senior living in Kirkwood. At 97, she gave up her role as an Adams Place second floor fire marshal, only when the heavy fire doors became too difficult for her to open. Her family was especially important to her. That began with Albert E. Zimmermann of St. Louis. The two met at Union Electric Company where they worked. They married September 10, 1938, a union that lasted 58 years until his death. The couple had two daughters, Joan (1940) and Sandra (1943). Several generations followed. Ginny, as she was known to many, was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Josie Cerny; her brother, Harold Cerny; and her husband, Albert. She is survived by her daughters, Joan Currie (Philip) of McLean, VA and Sandra Seay (Tom) of Knoxville, TN. Grandchildren: Cynthia Currie (Joe Tedino) of Chicago, IL; Richard Currie (Kim) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Laura Key (Wayne) of Sweetwater, TN; Liana Dranes of Mt. Juliet, TN; Michael Currie (Beth Capps) of Nashville, TN; Jeanne Wilson (Patrick) of Knoxville, TN; Paul Seay (Kathleen) of Abingdon, VA; and Ryan Seay (Phoebe) of Ann Arbor, MI. A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, March 15 at Grace Lutheran Church in Knoxville. Visitation begins at 11:30am. A second service and a burial will be held in St. Louis.
