W.O. (Joe) Smith

Smith, W.O. (Joe) – age 89 was born June 1, 1926 to Albert and Anna Smith, he went to the promise land to meet Jesus and his precious wife Bonnie on Sunday June 28, 2015. He was a charter member of both Oakland Street and Buffat Heights Baptist Church, and was a member of the Ready Sunday School Class. Joe joined the Navy at the age of 17 during WW II and served 4 years defending his country. He retired after 44 years’ service from the Coca Cola Company . Preceded in death by parents and dear wife Bonnie, sister Jean (Francis) Dunn, mother-in-law and father-in-law Sam and Ruby Medley and other members of the Medley family brothers-in-law Dr. Robert (Blanche) Black, Ralph (Geneva) Medley, and David Oxendine. Survived by son Joe Steven (Smoke) and Wife Kathy McCarrell Smith, brother Kenny Smith and wife Barbara, brother-in-law Vernon Brock and wife Marguerite, sister-in-law Lorine Oxendine, special niece Kim Fee and husband Mark, great nephews Tyler and Tanner Fee, several nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Joe was especially proud to be part of the Medley family. The family would like to express a special thanks to friends Billy Ellis and LeRoy and Ruth Lindsay for making Joe’s life more enjoyable these last few months, also Dr. David Hancock and the staff at both Fort Sanders and Shannondale Health Care. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm Wednesday July 1, 2015 at Buffat Heights Baptist Church (2800 Mill Road Knoxville, TN. 37924), with a funeral service to follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Dave Thomas and Rev. Jim Henry officiating. Music will be provided by David Hancock. Family and friends will leave Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel at 10:15 am Thursday July 2, 2015 and proceed to Woodlawn Cemetery for graveside services at 11:00 am with full military honors conducted by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. Flowers may be sent but you may make a memorial gift to the Young at Heart Seniors at Buffat Heights Baptist Church.
