Walter D. Bond

Walter D. Bond of Knoxville, age 89, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Monday, May 17, 2021. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Martha Ricks Bond; parents Charles Powell Bond and Susie Anna Bond; sisters Mildred Charlene Bond, Minnie Pearl Bond Hopkins; brothers Floyd Thomas Bond, Franklin "Roy" Bond, Robert Coy Bond, and James Oscar Bond. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Stephanie Bond of Knoxville, Jeffrey Bond (Esther) of Nashville, and Rachael Bond McKinley (Howard) of Pensacola; grandson Mac McKinley of Pensacola; brother-in-law Paul Ricks; sisters-in-law Melanie Ricks Ladd; Jo Ann Hughes Bond, and Phyllis Elaine Bond; numerous nieces and nephews. He retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1997 after 40 years as chemist/manager/senior scientist. A gifted scientist, he dedicated his career to making our world a better and safer place now and for generations to come, receiving an R&D 100 Award in 1985. He was a guest scientist at the Swiss Federal Institute for Nuclear Research (EIR) in Wurenlingen, Switzerland from 1970 to 1972. He was born in Wilson County, Tennessee, where he grew up with his seven beloved siblings surrounded by a large and loving extended family. Deeply devoted to church and family, he was a loving, kind and generous father. He enjoyed attending Bible study and sharing meals with his friends at church, fishing, gardening, travelling, spoiling his beloved pets and keeping his bird feeders filled. Friends and family treasured his integrity, steadfastness, strength of character, humility, kindness, patience, quiet good humor, and sense of fun. Previously a member of St. James Episcopal Church, he faithfully served as usher there for many years. The family wishes to thank his wonderful CNAs Shaquan Stinson, Kayleigh Jordan and Amanda Columbus for their excellent care of him, as well as his doctors, nurses and therapists. A Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knoxville, (date and time to be announced here), followed by a graveside service at Mount Pisgah Cemetery near Quebeck, Tennessee. Memorial donations in his name may be made to Young-Williams Animal Center, Knoxville, where he adopted his beloved cat Henrietta.
