Walter Orum Waddey

Walter Orum Waddey, 91, of Knoxville, TN, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 4, 2024, under the care of Sacred Ground Hospice House. Born on February 26, 1933, in Memphis, TN, Walter was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose life was defined by his deep faith, dedication to family, and service to others. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Orum Waddey and Alberta Gilbertson Waddey, and his children, Mark Franklin Waddey and Christian Dale Soronen. He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Cathy Carroll Ham Waddey; daughters Karen Powers (Bill), Laura Waddey, Catherine Pfeffer (Michael), and Bonny Cooper (Eddie); and grandchildren Natalie Cooper, Austin Cooper, Evan Cooper, Corey Cooper, Masiah Green, and Lisel Soronen. A standout student and athlete, Walter played football for Vanderbilt University before earning his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1957. After passing the Tennessee Bar exam, he moved to Kingsport, TN, where he opened his own law practice. His successful legal career spanned many years, but his true calling came when he was called into ministry. He transitioned to full-time service as a licensed local pastor for the United Methodist Church, where he shared his faith and touched the lives of many. His unwavering commitment to his faith shaped every aspect of his life, particularly his devotion to his family. Walter and Cathy built a life rich in love and shared experiences, enjoying family camping trips, gardening, hiking, nature walks including cousins, storytelling, and making caramel cake for family and friends. They also spent many joyful hours playing his favorite board games, Balderdash, Aggravation, and Bonanza with their extended Carroll family, and cheering on the University of Tennessee football team. His zeal for life and passionate spirit made him a cherished presence in the lives of his family and friends. Graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 9, 2024, Edgewood Cemetery; Justin Greer officiating. Friends may call at convenience Rose Funeral and Cremation-Mann Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Walter’s name to Sacred Ground Hospice House. Walter’s legacy of love, service, and faith will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
