Betty Sue Stone McNeil Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Betty Sue Stone McNeil – age 99 ½, of Knoxville, passed away peacefully Monday, July 18, 2022. Betty was born a precocious child on January 21, 1923, to Cecil Vaughn and Myrtle Anne Henry Stone in Knoxville, Tennessee. She is preceded by her husband, parents, and brothers Cecil Jr. and John Everett. Betty was married to Hoyle Graham McNeil for almost 50 years. They had 3 children, Hoyle Graham Jr. (Kimberly Bebb), Bruce Stone (Marlene York), and Marsha Anne (Steve Sherman); 4 grandchildren, Emily King (Jack), Bruce Jr. (Laura), Matthew Sherman, and Mary C. Sherman; and 4 great-grandchildren, Madeleine and Colin King and Olivia and Lucas McNeil. Education was important to Betty. She graduated from Young High School at age 16, in 1939, she attended the University of Tennessee receiving bachelor (1944) and masters (1945) degrees in home economics. She taught at Appalachian State, Carson Newman, UT Knoxville, and Young High School. She was proud that all her children and grandchildren are college graduates, many with advanced degrees. The love of her life was Hoyle. They were partners in many ways including his political career as City Councilman and Vice Mayor. Betty supported many organizations including Home Economics, Dogwood Arts, YWCA, Dulin Art Guild, Chapman Hwy. Garden Club, and Arthritis Foundation where she established the Circle of Hope Gala. Church Street Methodist Church was very important to her. She was a founding member of Murphy Builders Class, president of United Methodist Women, and other positions. Her love of learning and curiosity led her to travel to many parts of the world. Betty was never at a loss for words and everyone she met became a quick friend. She will be missed tremendously by her family, especially by Graham and Kimberly as her primary caretakers. She had a strong Christian faith and a great love for her family. She was one of a kind and there will never be another like her. She added joy to many lives. Many thanks to Elmcroft, Tennova West for excellent care, and Rev. Jan Wade for her spiritual help.
