Mr. Ernest L. Shipe Jr.

Shipe, Ernest, L., age 93, of Knoxville, died, Saturday, December 13, 2014. Mr. Shipe was born September 16, 1921 in Knoxville, TN and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1939. He met his wife, Barbara, while both attended University of Tennessee, where he received both a bachelor’s of science and master’s degree. He worked for the State Health Department and was the Director of East Tennessee Branch laboratories from 1958 until his retirement. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church serving as a deacon, elder and trustee. He was instrumental in the founding of Volunteer Ministries, a Knoxville agency that serves the homeless. Prior to returning to Knoxville in 1958, he was a research scientist for the United States Government at Fort Detrick, MD, and worked for the health department in Nashville, TN. He served in the United States Army medical and public health corps. He was stationed in Honolulu at the end of WWII. He retired as a LT Col. At the University of Tennessee, he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and Scabbard and Blade. He promoted the University of Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains throughout his travels. He was an avid fly fisherman and photographer. Upon retirement , he became the director of the Dialysis Center, Knoxville. Ernest pursued his passion for photography with “Ernie’s Hangups”. He traveled extensively in North America before and after Barbara Died in 1998. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, and Parents, Ernest and Mabel Shipe; sister, Edith Jones. Survived by sons, Ernest Alexander (Betty) Shipe of Northport, AL and Carter McCamy (Gale) Shipe; grandsons, Matthew A. (Jaime) Shipe of St. Louis, MO. And Steven C. Shipe of Nashville, TN ; nieces and nephews, Emily Jones, Kathy Jones and Lee Jones; devoted caregiver, Lynn Ramsey. A Celebration of Ernie’s life will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday at Second Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Barron officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Volunteer Ministries Center, PO Box 325, Knoxville, TN 37917 or the Friends of the Smokies, PO Box 1660, Kodak, TN 37764 or the charity of choice.
