Harriet Rowntree Campbell

Harriet Rowntree Campbell, age 92, of Knoxville passed away on Sunday January 1, 2023 – just in time to see her 93rd year. She was born in Knoxville at Fort Sanders Hospital on September 23, 1930. She graduated from Old Knoxville High in 1948. She graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (’52) where she earned the designation of Mortar Board and was a member and Vice President of the Tri Delta sorority. Harriet later returned to UT and received her Master’s in Fine Arts. She married the love of her life William (Bill) Campbell on July 2nd, 1952. They were married for 65 years before he preceded her in death. They lived in Orleans, France while Bill was deployed in the Army where they had their first son David and their first cat (one of many). After returning from France they lived in Memphis while Bill completed his schooling for dentistry before moving to Fountain City where they were active members in the community for 60+ years. Harriet was a member of Second Presbyterian Church for 50 years where she served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and was a part of the Presbyterian Women’s group. She was an avid painter and always continued to hone her skills constantly wanting to become a better artist. It was a theme in her life, as she loved learning and understanding the world and people in more depth. This played out through her involvement with the Athene Circle that she continued as a legacy from her Grandmother Fowler, her active role in the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and also serving as the President of the Knoxville Watercolor Society. Harriet also never met a cat or animal she did not like and rarely was found in the car not listening to an audio book courtesy of the Knoxville Public Library or NPR. More than anything she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her family. Harriet is preceded in death by her husband Bill; parents, Carl & Harriet; brothers, Jim, Carl and John; and sister, Lucy Cole. Harriet is survived by children, William David Campbell, DDS and wife Cathy of Seymour, TN; Ann Campbell Wallace of Knoxville, TN, and Christopher Harley Campbell and wife Tamara of Franklin, TN; grandchildren, Jeff Campbell (Rachel), Chris Campbell (Karli) Lesley Wallace Berman (Ben), Campbell Wallace (Catherine), William Campbell, and Rory Campbell; seven great-grandchildren, one on the way, and several nieces and nephews. The family extends their deepest thanks to the loving staff at Little Creek and all her previous caregivers for their care over the last few years of her life. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Rose Funeral & Cremation-Broadway on Saturday, January 7th. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 pm at Greenwood Cemetery.
