James E. (Jim) Station

STATION, JAMES E. (JIM) passed away peacefully on Monday, January 13, 2014, after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Anacortes, Washington on April 2, 1946, he was a loving husband, father and friend. His children, family and friends meant the world to him. He graduated from Kent-Meridian High School and as an All American high school football player, was recruited and played for the University of Washington. After losing his long time best friend in Vietnam, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army, earning a National Defense Service Medal and Sharpshooter badge. After being honorably discharged, he finished his college education at Drake University earning a BA in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and obtained a Certified Secondary Education Teacher degree. He moved to Denver, Colorado where he began working in Medical Sales, training physicians, nurses and technicians in the use of IVs, artificial kidneys and kidney dialysis machines. He made a career move into Real Estate working for Pavilion Home Builders as a Sales Manager where he was successful and achieved many business recognition awards. He developed a love for snow skiing and was a black diamond expert, enjoyed playing golf and was a big Denver Bronco fan. He was also a Denver Big Brother and supported various charities for underprivileged children. After meeting his wife Rita at a softball game; they married and moved to Knoxville, Tennessee to be closer to grandparents and family. He began his twenty plus year career in the insurance field starting with Mutual of Omaha as a District Sales Manager, eventually moving to owning his own insurance business until he retired in 2011. He always believed in showing people how much he cared before showing them how much he knew. He was active in the community and continued his love of football by volunteering as an assistant football coach for the Sacred Heart Middle School football team and as a football booster parent where he filmed the Knoxville Catholic High School football games for many years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorraine Stationak and brother Tommy Stationak. Jim is survived by his loving wife of thirty years Rita; loving daughter Alison Station and loving son Jeffrey Station; sisters Carolyn Schafer (Mt. Vernon, WA), Mary Jo Wallace and Kathy Hilderschield (Glen Ellen, CA), Margaret Toland (Anacortes, WA), and Dorothy Lyndell (Lake Steven, WA); his extended family Eloise and Larry Perry (Knoxville, TN), Richard and Sue Boughner (Knoxville, TN) and Fred and Julia Boughner (Florence, AL), nephews, great nieces, great nephews and special friends. The family would like to express their appreciation to the University of Tennessee Hospital 12th Floor Oncology Nursing staff and to Tennova Hospice for their loving care of Jim. Family and friends will gather at 8:30 a.m. on Friday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel to travel in procession to the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery on John Sevier Highway for a 9:30 a.m. graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society , 508 Princeton Rd, Johnson City, TN 37601.
