    Sarah Stowers

    March 3, 1932 - October 21, 2021

Sarah Hobson Stowers, Age 89, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away peacefully while surrounded by family on Thursday, October 21, 2021. Born on March 3, 1932 in Bluefield, WV, she was the daughter of the late Reverend Jennings Wise Hobson and Mary Louise Berkeley Hobson. Sarah attended Salem Academy and Salem College. While in college, she met the love of her life, Harry Wesley Stowers, Sr., also of Bluefield. They married in 1952, and their unconditional love for over fifty-four years of marriage was inspirational to her family and countless friends. Harry’s early career took them from Bluefield to Illinois and Pennsylvania. In 1960, they moved to Chattanooga when Harry and his brothers began Stowers Machinery Corporation. In 1982, the family business brought them to Knoxville. Sarah was the youngest of seven children, and family was always at the center of her life, as was her unwavering Christian faith. Her most joyful moments were those spent with her family, especially large, multigenerational family events. She was tremendously excited about the upcoming wedding of her youngest granddaughter, Carter Brock, to Daniel Schmidt, and we know that she will be with them in spirit. Sarah was very active for many years in St. John’s Cathedral, the Knoxville Garden Club, the Knoxville Museum of Art and The Episcopal School of Knoxville. She was an avid gardener, decorator, seamstress and bridge player. She gave freely of her time and resources and was deeply loved by everyone who knew her. Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Wesley Stowers, Sr.; parents, Reverend Jennings Wise Hobson and Mary Louise Berkeley Hobson; siblings Julia Lindsey, Mary Barksdale, Reverend Jennings Hobson Jr, Alice Moore, Ann Hobson, Frances Luther and grandson Dr. Adam Jennings Brock. She is survived by children, Wes (Liz) Stowers of Knoxville, Dr. Stewart (Samantha) Stowers of Gallatin TN, and Jenny (Adam) Brock of Knoxville; grandchildren Lisa (Ed) Rottmann of Knoxville, Louisa (Nick) Baldock of Destin, FL, Rachel (Marc) Kinney of Knoxville, Berkeley (Julio) Ugarte of Miami, FL, Sarah (Michael) Smith of Little Rock, AR, Carter Brock of Louisville, KY and Jack Stowers of Gallatin, TN; great-grandchildren Sloan Baldock, Evie Baldock, Rose Baldock, Natalie Rottmann, Gabe Rottmann, Owen Rottmann, Nicholas Ugarte, Adriana Ugarte, Thomas Ugarte, Paul Kinney, Andrew Kinney, Ella Smith and many beloved nieces and nephews. The family will hold a private graveside service on Monday, October 25 at 3:00 at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery, and a Celebration of Life on November 12 at 2:00 at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral, 413 Cumberland Avenue, Knoxville, TN. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to The McNabb Center, 200 Tech Centre Drive, Knoxville, TN 37912, The Episcopal School of Knoxville, 950 Episcopal School Way, Knoxville, TN 37932, or St. John’s Cathedral, 413 Cumberland Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37902. Rose Funeral and Cremation Mann, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919, 865-588-8578. Condolences may be offered at www.rosefuneraltn.com.
