March 31, 1926 - December 31, 2021
Shirley Hendrix went from this world to the next after a rich and full life of more than 95 years. Born in Cleveland, Tennessee, she lived most of her life in Knoxville. The 3 greatest loves of her life were her family, her church, and the Sweet Adelines. She was a longtime member of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir, served as bookkeeper and secretary, and worshipped joyfully and regularly. Sweet Adelines, the international barbershop harmony association was Shirley's most avid avocation. She was honored by Sweet Adelines International for 60 years of membership. But she was a member even longer. The records only go back 60 years. As a Sweet Adeline, Shirley sang in the chorus, various quartets, and coached and filled in as director. With her choruses, Smoky Mountain Harmony and K-Town Sound, she attended countless international competitions. Shirley valued her family most of all. She is survived by 3 children, 5 children in-law, 8 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. With her husband Frank Hendrix, who preceded her in death by 20 years, she raised 3 children, Len Hendrix, Les Hendrix, and Lois Evans. Len and Pat Hendrix gave her 4 grandchildren, 4 grandchildren in-law, and 8 great grandchildren: Amelia and Per-Ole Lind, Laura and Mitchell Groothuis, Leigh and Matt Kemp, and Thomas and Allison Hendrix. Her “great grands” by Len and Pat are Rena and Peter Lind, Abigail and Dixon Groothuis, June and Benjamin Hendrix, and William Kemp and baby girl Kemp (due in January 2022). Lois Hendrix Evans and husband Scott Evans gave Shirley 4 grandchildren and a granddaughter in-law: Chris and Jessica Evans, Courtney Evans, Hallie Evans, and Samantha Evans. “Great grands” by Lois and Scott are Greyson Bailey and Fae Evans. Shirley was very proud of nephews Al (Jennifer) Carr and Kurt (Tami) Hendrix and their families. Nephew Hugh (Valeria) Carr preceded Shirley in death, but she remained very close to Hugh's daughter Dr. Rachael Evans. A memorial service will be scheduled at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church sometime in March. Memorial gifts may be given to Sequoyah Church or the charity of your choice. Flowers will be received for the service when it is scheduled. Arrangements by Rose Funeral and Cremation - Mann. Online condolences may be made at rosefuneraltn.com.
