Betty DeBord

DeBord, Betty Jean Phillips, born March 25, 1933 in Decatur, Alabama passed peacefully from her earthly home to her heavenly home on Sunday, July 11, 2010. Betty loved her family, Foster & Rebecca Phillips and brothers, Raymond and Thomas, who preceded her death. She married the love of her life, L.N. “Chic” DeBord on June 20, 1952 and they celebrated 58 years of love and laughter and increased the family by adding two daughters, Suzanne and Sandra. Betty loved working as an office manager for TN Tape & Label after raising her daughters. She enjoyed a loving relationship with her son-in-law, Edward Cantey, Jr. and nothing gave her more joy than spending time with her grandsons Christopher, Nicholas, and Evan Cantey. In more recent years, she delighted in volunteering with Chic delivering food for FISH, taking cards and visiting with those unable to attend church, working at Baptist West as a volunteer, and sitting with the children on Mondays for the leadership of BSF. Betty was humbled to know Christ as her Savior and increased her faith through attending Bible Study Fellowship for the last 7 years that she was physically able to do so. She was a true prayer warrior – quietly interceding for her family and friends. She will be especially missed by those friends she loved so very much: the BHS Class of 1951, the CBC Adult Sunday School Class, and her BSF group. The last 18 months of her life brought physical challenges to Betty that she fought with great strength and even greater grace. She never failed to thank each and every one involved with her care for the smallest gesture made; her sweet spirit in suffering brought a smile to their faces and a gentle moment in their day. The family would like to express their gratitude to the entire 4th floor staff of Shannondale Health Care Facility and Amedisys Hospice for their tenderness in attending to Betty as her health declined. A worship service celebrating Betty’s life will be held at Central Baptist Church of Bearden on Wednesday, July 14 at 10 am with Rev. Mark Moreland and Rev. Tommy Campbell officiating. Interment following the service at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers include Edward Cantey, Christopher Cantey, Nicholas Cantey, Evan Cantey, Michael Karnes, and Grant Karnes.
