Cary Fletcher Spence

Cary Fletcher Spence, also known by many as “Chopper,” was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed member of the community. He passed away on May 5, 2025, at the age of 85. Fletcher was a proud alumnus of Riverside Military Academy, where he excelled as a football and track athlete, holding the school record for the fastest 440-yard dash until recently. He continued his education at the University of Tennessee, where he was a dedicated member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. A successful businessman, Fletcher owned and operated Tennessee Belting and Supply and Halls Tool and Equipment Rentals. His entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence were evident in every endeavor he undertook. Fletcher was a former member of Cherokee Country Club, Men’s Cotillion, the Rotary Club of Knoxville, and Ducks Unlimited, reflecting his passion for community and conservation. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting dove, quail, ducks, pheasants, and grouse, sharing many memorable moments with friends and family. He cherished the mountains, spending time at the family cabin in Elkmont and later at their mountain home on the water in Townsend. These places were a source of joy and tranquility for Fletcher and his loved ones. Fletcher was well known for his captivating storytelling, bringing laughter and warmth to every gathering. He enjoyed playing poker and was a devoted enthusiast of UT Vols Football, cheering them on with unwavering support. Fletcher was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley Cary Spence and Emily Handly Spence; his sisters, Hannah Parten and Shirley Davenport; and his first wife, Carol Kress Spence. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 45 years, Barbara Spence; his children, Ross Spence (Brenda), Jason Spence (Marianne), and Mary Emily Morris (Rusty); and his four grandchildren, Ellie and Miller Spence, and Mary Handly and Caroline Morris. Fletcher's legacy of love, dedication, and community spirit will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him. A private graveside service, officiated by The Reverend Barbara Kirk-Norris will be held at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
