Claude D. Houbler

Houbler, Claude D., Major, U.S. Army, Retired, age 91, of Knoxville, went home to be with our Lord, Thursday, September 8, 2011 at his home. He was born, June 22, 1920 in Mount Vernon, Ohio to the late Ethel and Eckles Houbler. Major Houbler was a member of Erin Presbyterian Church. He served in the United States Army from November 1940 to January 1961. During Major Houbler's military career, he was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor Clasp, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Senior Parachutist Badge, the Army Commendation Medal with Clasp, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Medal with Star and the Korean Service Medal with two Stars. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, he taught Social Studies at Bearden Senior High school from August 1964 to January 1983. "The Major" was well known by all his students as a very fair and entertaining teacher. He was strict, but had a great teaching style which his pupils enjoyed, and he never forgot a student. Major Houbler was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Patricia Kennedy Houbler; brother, T/Sgt. Donald D. Houbler and sister, Thelma E. Welch. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Jenny and Randy Boyd of Knoxville and Judy and Ernie Clapp of Gallatin, TN; grandchildren, Thomas and Harrison Boyd and Brittany and Samuel Clapp; great-grandson, Kayden Clapp; niece, Ann Kennedy; nephews, Rick Kennedy and Jim Kennedy and their families and other family members. A memorial service will be held 12:00 PM Saturday at Erin Presbyterian Church with Reverend John Stuart officiating. A 2:00 PM Interment service will follow at Lynnhurst Cemetery with full military honors presented by the Volunteer State Veterans' Honor Guard. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Erin Presbyterian Church, 200 Lockett Road, Knoxville, TN 37919.
