Doris Jane (Dottie) Kelly

Doris Jane (Dottie) Smith Ball Fischer Kelly, age 91, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Morning Pointe Assisted Living of Powell. In addition to experiencing its joys, she endured many trials and heartaches in her life with grace, fortitude, and indomitable spirit. Her faith and her love of Jesus Christ shown in everything she did. She was an influencer and inspirational leader for her family and multitude of friends, not through awards and positions, but through her legacy of unconditional love and encouragement. She was known to “adopt” everyone she met. Dottie was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church since 1929, where she was a founding member of the post-war Married Couples Class, a member of the choir, and the Elizabeth Circle of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Akima Club, Noweta Garden Club, and Ossoli Circle. She was the consummate Southern woman, wife and mother, school room mother, scout leader, church school teacher, youth leader, hostess, and party planner. She attended McCallie Elementary, Park Jr. High, and Knoxville High School. She began her career at Hurley & Associates at the age of 18 during WWII, and worked post-war there with husband Darris until her children were born. She worked part time as Education Director of Central UMC, where she modeled faith with compassion for those in need. She then retired from TVA after 18 years of service as an executive administrative assistant, keeping numerous executives organized. She later worked for five years for Stroud Financial Management. She was a patriot, lifelong UT fan, and lover of history (especially Knoxville history). In later years, she enjoyed traveling widely throughout the U.S. Preceded in death by husbands Darris Ball, Harry Fischer, and Hal Kelly, son Warren K. (Kim) Ball, parents Harry Smith and Bertie Smith Jenkins, brothers Lyndon and Harry Charles Smith, sisters Helen Donnell, Evelyn Day, and Lucille Palmer. Survived by daughter Merrie Suzanne (Sue) Renfro, daughter-in-law Sally Ball, step-children Craig (Nancy) Fischer, Doris Fischer, John (Jennifer) Kelly, Jackie Kelly (fiancé Jerry Page,) grandchildren Andrew (Regina) Renfro, Mark Renfro, Stephanie (Matt) Byerly, Jennie Ball, Adam (Jessica) Kelly, Reece Kelly, and Garrett (Brittany) Chapman, great-grandchildren Eleanor Renfro and Ben and Katie Byerly, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Central United Methodist Church, 201 E. Third Ave. from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Friday, February 23 followed by a Celebration of Life service at 6 p.m. Burial will be Saturday, February 24 at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery.
