Frances Jereldine Carlen Long

Frances Jereldine Carlen Long, born in Cookeville, Tennessee on July 20, 1927, died on June 5, 2015 at her home of 56 years in Knoxville, Tennessee. She is preceded in death by her husband, Wendell Jackson Long, her parents William Benton Carlen and Frances Loucinda Whitson Carlen, and her brother, William Benton Carlen, Junior. She is survived by her daughter, Loucinda Long McLean and her husband, Phil, and her son, Wendell Jackson “Jack” Long, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn; grandchildren: Jackson Ray Inscoe and his wife, Laura, Benton Ross Inscoe, Adam Jackson Long, and Carlen Elizabeth Long; great-grandchildren: Jackson Lewis Inscoe and Wyatt Ray Inscoe; her brother, Walter Whitson Carlen and his wife, Linda and sister-in-law, Margaret Houser Carlen, and many nieces and nephews. Frances, affectionately known as “Jere,” or “Dee Dee,” was deeply loved by her family and numerous lifelong friends. She was an enthusiastic learner and avid reader who never tired of studying history and culture. She earned a Bachelors Degree from Vanderbilt University and a Masters Degree from Smith College. She traveled extensively, read several daily newspapers, and enjoyed conversing with fellow travellers in her quest for knowledge and understanding of the world. She often shared news clippings and articles with family and friends regarding their interests. Perhaps Frances’s graciousness, interest, and kindness to others are what marked her as an extraordinary woman and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Frances leaves a legacy of Christian faithfulness and devotion. She was a joy to all who knew her. Her family is deeply grateful for all the loving care and dedication Frances received from her caregivers: Robin Pataro, Debra Petrose , Shirley Patrick, Vicky Reed , and Debra Smith. Her son, Jack, and daughter, Loucinda, also thank their cousin, Malinda Carlen Little, for the tireless love and care she has extended to her Dee Dee in their absence. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Laurel Church of Christ at 3457 Kingston Pike, Knoxville TN 37919 or the charity of your choice. A private family graveside service was held June 7, 2015.
