Mr. Gregg Nelson Lagerberg

Gregg Nelson Lagerberg, age 65, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 19, 2017, following a courageous two-year battle with cancer. He was born in Salina, Kansas to Don and Carolyn (Anderson) Lagerberg and was the proud grandson of Swedish immigrants. He graduated from Salina High School and attended Kansas State University. He graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Engineering. A licensed mechanical engineer, he worked for Science Applications International, and for Boeing Aircraft, Westinghouse, and others. Gregg was an artist at heart, and his artistic pursuits included painting, pottery, photography, woodworking, and music. He was Head of the Student Union Art Gallery at Kansas State. He was an expert birdwatcher, gardener, cyclist, and soccer player. He played for the K-State Soccer Club; and he coached a Knoxville AYSO youth soccer team for several years, including leading them to a league championship. He was keenly interested in nature and in world culture, and took great pleasure in international travel. He was an ardent fan of K-State athletics and of professional cycling and soccer. He loved all things Swedish. Gregg knew that happiness is found in relationships. He was utterly devoted to his family and extremely loyal to his friends. He had a mischievous sense of fun and relished retelling, with playful grin and twinkling eye, stories of harmless practical jokes and the humorous mishaps of life. He was a long-time member of Woodlawn Christian Church, where he could be found behind the scenes doing whatever needed to be done. He was very observant of people and their needs and went about quietly serving his Lord through serving others. Gregg is survived by his two beloved "girls": his wife of 26 years, Jill (Allen) Lagerberg and his daughter Carin Lagerberg; and by his sister Greta Lagerberg; brother and sister-in-law Jeff and Laurie Lagerberg; and nephews Adam and Brett Lagerberg. The family offers heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Antony Charles and the outstanding staff of University Cancer Specialists and the UT Cancer Institute for their extremely knowledgeable and compassionate care. Family and friends will gather at Woodlawn Cemetery (4500 Woodlawn Pike) on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 10:45 a.m. for an 11:00 burial service. A Celebration of Life Service will take place that afternoon at Woodlawn Christian Church (4339 Woodlawn Pike, Knoxville, TN 37920), beginning at 1:30 p.m. with a prelude of music special to Gregg.
