Hal Carter Nichols, Jr.

NICHOLS, HAL CARTER, JR. - after a full and happy life of 88 years, Hal Nichols passed away at home with his beloved wife Eleanor on Friday, October 5, 2012. Hal spent his life in Knoxville, and his parents were Hal C. Nichols, Sr. and Annie Turner Nichols. He was the oldest of seven children; John Edward, Victor, Leroy and Anne preceded him in death. Frank and Ruth Lynn Ellison are survivors. He was the grandson of John Turner, builder and contractor of many Knoxville homes and buildings. Hal was proud of the fact that he was an electrical engineer and was plant engineer at Rohm & Haas Company for 34 years. He was active in West Knoxville Rotary and enjoyed membership in the Society for Barbershop Singing in America. Hal was for many years an active member of Erin Presbyterian Church. After his marriage to Eleanor Harrison he joined First United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. During WWII Hal served in the United States Army Air Corps and always loved to fly. He was graduated from the University of Tennessee in Electrical Engineering and was a 1942 graduate of historic Knoxville High School. Throughout his life Hal was always eager to experience new things and was known for his wonderful sense of humor. Eleanor Harrison and Hal were married in 2001; Eleanor has two sons Bruce E. Harrison and wife Grace of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and John W. Harrison and wife Lisa of Fairhope, Alabama. Eleanor's grandchildren are Isabelle and Iris Harrison. Hal was married to Suelynn Wooten Nichols for fifty years and raised two children Cathy Nichols Keller married to Reed A. Keller and their children are Jessica Martin, Michael Keller, and Janet; and grandchildren Wade, Ivy, and Carter Nichols of Atlanta; and Katrina Nichols Rothblum married to Dr. Lawrence I. Rothblum and son Sam Rothblum of Oklahoma City and daughter Leigh R. Checkman of New Orleans, Louisiana, married to Dan Checkman and son Noah. There will be a private burial service followed by a Celebration of Life Service at the First United Methodist Church on Monday, October 8, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.
