Kathryn Ann Brown

Kathryn Ann “Katty” Morris Brown passed away peacefully Friday, October 28, 2022, in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was a Knoxville native born January 31, 1926 to the late Lloyd Leonard and Kathryn Thomas Morris and wife of the late Stanley Porter Brown, Jr. Her grandfather and father were among those who founded Arlington Baptist Church in north Knoxville, where she was baptized. She later joined First Baptist Church and married Stanley there in 1948. She graduated Old Knoxville High School in 1944 where she was an R.O.T.C. sponsor, sweetheart of the Esquire Club, and member of the Top Hat Club. She graduated from The University of Tennessee in 1948, where she majored in Child Development and Home Economics and was a Pi Chapter member of Chi Omaga Fraternity. Katty taught Sunday School at First Baptist, First Presbyterian, and St. Johns Episcopal Cathedral. She was a charter member and on the board of the Dogwood Ball and was an active board member to preserve the Bijou Theater. Katty was a writer for the West Side Newspaper and in 1981 wrote and published the genealogy of her husband’s family, The Sheltons in England and America, which is listed in the Library of Congress. In 1980, she opened and was an owner of Antiques and Accents-Interiors. She and Stanley enjoyed boating and golfing and were members of the Knoxville Yacht Club, Holston Hills Country Club, Fox Den, and Cherokee Country Club. She also belonged to First Families of Tennessee, Knoxville Historical Society, Cherokee Hills Garden Club and the Knoxville Welsh Society. Katty leaves her children, Stanley Porter Brown III, Kathryn Swann Brown Jaffurs and husband Chris; grandson, the late Stanley Porter Brown, IV; granddaughters, Summer Lynn Brown and husband John Aubrey Hendren, Lauren Jaffurs Hall and husband Michael; great-grandchildren, Derek Brown, Juniper LaVerne Hendren, Caroline Elizabeth Hall, Eleanor Bailey Hall. Other family members include the late Cynthia Moore Whitlow and husband Ron, Susan Moore Gougeon and husband Charles, Rebecca Brown Hyde (sister-in-law), the late Michael Taylor and wife Simone and Jill Gaydos and husband Jerry. Also preceding her in death sister, Mary Morris Moore and husband John Bradford Moore. Katty was of the Christian faith and was also surrounded by many other Christian relatives and loving friends whose lives abound in the love of God. Katty will be laid to rest with Stanley at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 5901 Lyons View Pike on Thursday, November 3rd at 1:00pm. Her Funeral Service will be held that afternoon at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral, 413 W. Cumberland Ave, at 3:00pm, with The Very Reverend John Ross officiating. Receiving of Friends will follow.
