Kore Q. Chedester III

Kore Q. Chedester, III - age 67, of Knoxville , TN , died Monday, January 6, 2014, at the University of Tennessee Hospital with loving family members at his side. He had battled lung cancer for nearly two years , and had been treated both locally and at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore , MD. He was born March 13, 1946 in Morgantown, WV , the only child of the late Kore and Jane Lucille (Gainer) Chedester, and grew up in the Knoxville area. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from UT In 1970, but spent most of his career in the coal mining industry, beginning in June 1974 in Clairfield with the establishment of the Double Q Corporation, of which he was president, and continuing into the late ‘90’s, when he retired to pursue other business interests, including commercial real estate, among others. KQ, as he preferred to be called, was a man of wide and varied interests and pursuits. He was a capable pilot, having owned and flown a succession of aircraft in the course of his business activities. He completed courses of instruction at the Bob Bondurant Auto Racing School in Las Vegas , NV , and at Summit Point, WV, before racing his own car at tracks across the country, and for a time also rode a Honda Gold Wing touring motorcycle. For several years he owned and supervised the operation of a horse farm in this area, where American Saddlebred horses were bred and trained. He traveled in Europe and the UK , and had an abiding interest in Military History, especially in the US Army’s Italian Campaign of WWII. in which his father had served. He was blessed with a keen sense of humor and an inquisitive mind, and could hold his own in a discussion in almost any setting. Among his celebrity acquaintances were actors Paul Newman and William Shatner, astronaut Gordon Cooper, and actor-politician Fred Thompson. He will be fondly remembered by family and friends for his lovable eccentricities, as well as for his professional accomplishments. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by several aunts and uncles, maternal and paternal. He is survived by two daughters, Angela Brite Chedester Hunter of Damascus, MD, and Elizabeth Jane Chedester and husband Montana Low of Fort Lauderdale, FL, a grandson Garrett Benjamin Hunter, also of Damascus, MD, uncles, aunts, numerous cousins, including William Luzier and wife Beatrice of Frederick, MD, with whom he shared a special ‘big brother/little brother’ relationship, since each of them was an only child and their mothers were sisters. There will be no visitation or viewing, and services will be held at the convenience of the family.
