Leonard Bowers Jr.

Leonard Bowers, Jr, 91, of Knoxville, TN went into the arms of his Lord and Savior on November 30, 2021. Leonard was born in Tellico Plains, TN on December 9, 1929. Leonard was a member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church, Grace Baptist Church and a charter member of Cumberland Baptist Church. Leonard proudly served in the Air Force and had a 49 year career at Y-12 where he retired in 1995. Leonard’s loves and passions were his wife, four children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and coaching. For over 20 years he touched the lives of hundreds of boys and girls in the Knoxville area as he coached baseball, basketball and softball. During his life he fondly reminisced about his past ballplayers and their impact and accomplishments as adults. Leonard is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Caroylea McKnight Bowers; sons, Jim Bowers and Tim Bowers (wife - Jackie); daughters, Linda McCoig (husband - Brian) and Lisa Cox; nine grandchildren, Caitlin Bowers King (husband- Michael), Brendan Bowers (wife - Miranda), Riley Bowers, Carmen Bowers, Devin Bowers, Weston Bowers, Kendra McCoig, Thomas “T.J.” McCoig and Adler Cox; four great grandchildren, Hudson King, Parker King, Everly King and Colton King; brother-in-law, Charles Hammett; and many nieces and nephews. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Margaret Bowers; brother, Kenneth Bowers; sister, Helen Bowers Isabel; brothers/sisters-in-law, April Bowers, Ella Mae Hammett, Wayne and Ruth Noe, Joseph and Judy McKnight, Harry and Anne McKnight, Roy and Frances McKnight; son-in law, Michael Cox. Leonard’s family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 7th from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Rose Funeral & Cremation-Broadway, 1421 Broadway, Knoxville, TN. A Celebration of Life service, conducted by Rev. Bob Brown, will immediately follow at 6:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, Leonard requested you “help our elderly, feed a hungry soul, express your love to a lonesome person, give a stranger a big smile and ask about their day and say a prayer for America. If you do one of the above your ‘flower’ will bloom forever”. Family and friends will meet at 8:15 AM on Wednesday, December 8th, at the Veterans Cemetery, 2200 E. Governor John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, TN for an 8:30 AM graveside service, with grandsons serving as pallbearers.
