Mary Neal Hodges Sloan Johnson

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Neal Hodges Sloan Johnson on April 16, 2025. Mary was born October 7, 1932, in South Knox County. She was a graduate of Young High School and Knoxville Business College. She was employed at Pittsburg Plate Glass for six years, where she met her husband Glenn H. Sloan, who passed away in 1994. She was employed by TVA, in the Legal Division for 30 years, retiring in 1994. In 1996 she married Gordon Johnson, who passed away in 2005. She was always dearly loved by the Johnson family and was truly accepted as one of their own. Mary, a cherished individual, was known for her kind, loving, caring, and humorous personality. "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Acts 20:35. This was Mary's motto she lived by. Mary loved her Lord, and her church family at First Baptist Church of Knoxville. She helped and attended many ministries over the years. She helped in VBS, worked in the library, sang in the Golden Notes, attended Sunday School, Senior Exercise Class, and many other activities over the years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Lee Hodges and Ruth Ella Wells Hodges, and first cousin, Ida Bernice Clifton Satterfield, who her parents raised. She is survived by her sister Naomi Ellen Hodges Thomas (Kenneth) Ray Thomas-deceased), nephew Steve A. Thomas (Anita Rosenbalm Jenkerson Thomas-deceased), niece Nancy Thomas Lewelling (John C. Lewelling), great-niece Morgan Elizabeth Lewelling Oneal (Malik N. Oneal), great -nephew Mark Ellis Lewelling, great-great-nephew Myles Ray Oneal. Although Mary is gone, she will live in our hearts forever. Mary always had a Siamese cat or two around her, her whole life. There was Toto, Tigger, Cocoa and many more. She was truly an animal lover when she rode the goats as a child. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 26, 2025, Rose Funeral and Cremation-Mann Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m., until 2:00 p.m., preceding the service.
