Mary Phifer Daugherty

Mary Clotilde Phifer “Suggie” “Mamaw” Daughtery, age 86 of Knoxville, departed this life on Saturday, June 19, 2010. She was member of Woodlawn Christian Church. Mary was a graduate of old Knoxville High School, class of 41~B, and the National Business College of Knoxville. She retired in May 1990 after 27 years as Medical Records Assistant at Greene Valley Developmental Center, Greeneville, Tennessee. Mary was born in Tugalo, Habersham Co., Georgia but her family moved to Knoxville when she was two years old. After Business College she worked with Knox County Agricultural Extension office in the Courthouse. She and her husband were married in June 1945 while he was a student at Johnson Bible College. They moved directly to their first pastorate with Baxter Church of Christ, Harlan County Kentucky. Mary and her husband ministered to Christian Churches in Pennington Gap, Virginia; Harrisburg, Illinois, and Greenville, Tennessee coming to Minister at First Christian Church in 1961. After 13 years there, they ministered to the Mt. Bethal Christian Church, Limestone for five years; Central Christian, Greeneville for five years. They retired from there in 1984. She helped her husband in three interim ministries since that time. Together they were ministers for 65 years, beginning in 1945. She was a faithful helpmate to her husband. She served the churches as teacher, youth sponsor, either sang in choir or directed, played organ and piano when needed, active in ladies' groups, VBS, and Christian summer camps. She was preceded in death by parents, Wilkie and Zula Bennett Phifer; two brothers, W.H. Phifer Jr. and Lambreth Ashley Phifer; sister, Barbara Jean “Bobbie” Dyer. Mary is survived by her loving family: husband of 65 years, Glen W. Daugherty, retired longtime minister of Christian Churches; son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Sandi Daugherty Jr.; two grandchildren, Christopher G. Daugherty and wife Kim; Cassandra D. Nicholson and husband A.J.; sister, Constance “Connie” Phifer Burnett; brother, James W.”Bill” Phifer; several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Glen & Mary Daugherty Schoarship Fund, Johnson Bible College, 7900 Johnson Road, Knoxville, Tennessee 37998.
