Warren DeWitt Meola

On Tuesday, April 2, 2019, Warren DeWitt Meola, loving husband and father of four children, passed away at age 88. Warren was born on May 10, 1930 in Port Jefferson, NY to Thomas and Ellen (DeWitt) Meola. He received his engineering degree from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington in 1952, and worked as a project manager in civil engineering for over 50 years. On September 18, 1954, he married June Lois White. They raised three daughters and one son, Vicki, Cheryl, Linda, and Tom. Warren was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1952-54. While serving in the Army, he met and married June in Washington DC. His career afforded him the opportunity to live in many locations including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Alabama, South Carolina, Florida, Texas, and finally Marietta, Georgia, where he spent the end of his career working for Raytheon. He was a member of the Roswell United Methodist Church in Marietta where he enjoyed volunteering for traffic patrol duty during Sunday services. He and June shared a love of the mountains, and they often traveled to Gatlinburg to visit the Smoky Mountains. He also enjoyed taking pictures, and while they were dating, he took a picture of June at Clingmans Dome in the Smokies. This picture was a favorite of his, and during family trips to the Smokies, he duplicated this photo with both June and his daughters on multiple occasions. He loved his alma mater, VMI and attended multiple class reunions with June and his children over the years. He loved to watch college and professional football and was an avid Miami Dolphins fan. He also loved baseball, and his favorite team was the original Dodgers from Brooklyn. He loved music and playing ragtime on the piano. On occasion, he was also known to entertain his family with the accordion and the ukulele. His pride and joy in his retirement was a beautiful antique and fully restored player piano. He had a huge heart and great compassion for animals, and he taught this compassion by example to his children. He also had a great sense of humor and could be counted on for laughter and smiles at family gatherings. He loved a good libation, watching the horse races, and playing poker with friends. He also enjoyed golf, fishing, bowling, baking bread, and collecting stamps, coins, and civil war memorabilia. Warren was preceded in death by his wife, June White Meola, his son Tom Meola, his father, Thomas Meola, and his mother, Ellen Meola. He is survived by his daughters, Vicki, Cheryl, and Linda Meola, his grandsons Coleman and Matthew Meola, his brother John Meola, and his sister Barbara Pick. The family will receive friends from 5-6:30 pm Friday April 12, 2019 at ROSE MORTUARY MANN HERITAGE CHAPEL. Family and friends will meet at 12:45 pm on Saturday April 13, 2019 at Beech Springs Cemetery for a 1:00 pm graveside service with Full Military Honors.
